The literature of Telangana is a rich tapestry woven from classical Telugu and Sanskrit, vibrant folk and oral traditions, Persian-influenced Deccani Urdu, and powerful modern voices of resistance and social justice. From ancient poets who defied royal patronage to revolutionary balladeers who became the voice of the marginalized, Telangana’s literary heritage is both deep and dynamic.

These foundational figures shaped Telugu literature from the Telangana region, often writing in the local dialect and devotional traditions.

Koravi Goparaju 13th–14th century Simhasana Dwatrimsika Adapts the classic tales of King Vikramaditya’s throne; written in Telangana dialect.
Gona Buddha Reddy 13th century Ranganatha Ramayanam One of the earliest Telugu Ramayanas; a warrior and poet who patronized many scholars.

The Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi (Nizam) dynasties fostered a rich tradition of Persian and Deccani Urdu literature.

1. Kaloji Narayana Rao (1914–2002) – Praja Kavi

  • Born: September 9, 1914, in Gattahalli village, Bijapur district, Karnataka; family later moved to Madikonda, Warangal district.
  • Original name: Raghuveer Narayana Laxmikantha Srinivas Rao.
  • Recognition: His birthday (September 9) is celebrated as Telangana Language Day.
  • Role: President of Telangana Rachayita Ka Sangam (1953).

2. Dasharathi Krishnamacharyulu – Abhyudhaya Kavi

3. Gaddar (Gummadi Vittal Rao) – Praja Yudhanaka

  • Born: Toopran, Medak district.
  • Name origin: Inspired by Ghadar Party.
  • Role: Revolutionary folk singer and poet.

4. Goreti Venkanna – Praja Kavi (People’s Poet)

  • Born: Gouraram village, Telkapally mandal, Nagarkurnool district.

  • Influences: Speeches of Jakka Venkataiah and Puchalapalli Sundaraiah; also influenced by "Mitra Shashi" and Oggu stories of Adavi Bidda.

1. Guda Anjaiah (1955 – 2016)

  • Born: 1955 in Lingampally village, Dandepalli Mandal, Adilabad district.
  • Profession: Pharmacist.
  • Role: From the 1969 Telangana movement through later phases, communicated injustices through his songs.

2. Dr. C. Narayana Reddy (Jnanpith Award winner)

  • Won India’s highest literary honor, the Jnanpith Award, for his epic poem Viswambhara.
  • A towering figure in modern Telugu literature.

3. Ramesh Karthik Nayak

  • First tribal writer to win the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar.
  • Short story collection Dhavlo chronicles the life of the Gor Banjara tribe.

4. Folk Balladeers & Oggu Katha Performers

  • The Oggu Katha tradition narrates ballads praising local deities like Mallanna and Beerappa.
  • Performed by Oggu priests and passed down orally.
  • Represents living folk literature of Telangana.
